Abstract
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a genetically regulated, cellular suicide mechanism that plays a crucial role in development as well as in the maintenance of homeostasis. Exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) induces apoptosis in mammalian cells. The caspase group of protease is essential for the apoptosis. However, the relationship between caspase-3 and UV-induced apoptosis is not studied well. Our purpose is to examine the expression of caspase-3 in cultured fibroblasts and melanocyte cells following UVB irradiation. NIH 3T3 cells and Melan-A melanocyte cells were irradiated with increasing doses of UVB and analyzed for procaspase-3 expression using RT-PCR and Western blotting. RT-PCR showed increased expression of in procaspase-3 in both cell lines after UVB irradiation. Western blotting also disclosed the same expression.
